Position in School of Theatre: Sound Designer

Hometown: Born in Wooster, Ohio but considers himself a Florida native

1.  How did you get your start in theatre?

I started having an interest in sound around my freshman year of high school but did not get introduced to theatre until Guys and Dolls my sophomore year. Thinking back on those times I’m sure it was exactly that, a start. Sorry everyone that had to hear that. I have been involved with some aspect of sound design and installation since then, but didn’t really make it a life goal until I co-designed a production of Ragtime. It was truly a life changing experience and showed me my place was in theatre.

2.  What is the best performance you have ever seen OR what is the craziest thing that has happened to you during a performance?

Having to choose the best performance I’ve seen is a daunting task. As you can imagine, I enjoy shows that push technology to new levels. One such show was Jersey Boys. Not because it was a theatrical masterpiece, although it was very enjoyable, but because the sound design was awesome. The seamless integration of the band and cast left a lasting impression on how technology can be transparent if properly executed.

3.  If you could have any career outside of theatre, what would it be and why?

It would definitely involve sound. I worked through college as a professional sound system designer/ installer. I really enjoy the physics behind sound and the problem solving that comes with large-scale system design and installation.

4.  What inspires you in your free time/ what do you do for fun?

I have a hard time relaxing. I always need to be in the middle of something. From working on my house ,to my car, some spur of the moment project or hanging with friends. I like to keep busy.

5.  What brought you to Florida State?

I have lived in Tallahassee since age 10. I was also student at FSU. When this position became available some good friends who also work at FSU urged, no told me I needed to apply. It has been a great fit.

6.  If you could give an aspiring theatre artist any piece of advice, what would it be?

Be kind and patient to those around you. No matter who you are and what you’ve achieved, treat everyone with kindness and respect.

7.  Wild Card Question: If you could be any literary character, who would it be and why?

Sherlock Holmes because he is rational, witty and loves a good challenge.
