Event Details
The School of Theatre will present El Coqui: A One-Act Puerto Rican Play, written by undergraduate student Cristian Mercado as a part of his thesis. The show will be presented on February 9th, 10th, and 11th 8 PM in the Augusta Conradi Theatre. El Coqui is open to the public and no reservations are necessary for seating.
The one-act play revolves around two Puerto Rican family members in a post-Hurricane Maria setting. The play deals with themes of modern imperialism, colonialism, and terrorism, what it means to be Puerto Rican. The play is entitled El Coqui and it is as much a story of self exploration as it is a play that deals with the aforementioned themes. The conflict comes from our protagonist, representing Cristian Mercado, struggling to understand the cultural and colonial history of Puerto Rico.
