John Pace Seavering is a fledgling publisher, with enough money to produce one person's work. His conflict: to publish a novel by his best friend Denny, or to publish a novel by his mistress, Jessie. As he attempts to overcome this resounding question, a mysterious machine appears which has the potential to solve his dilemma.
