Theatre Management

Amanda Chandler

I came to this program after working as a theatre arts teacher for 10 years. I saw a need in myself to develop my leadership skills and abilities, and I saw a place for myself in the world of regional and non - profit theatre. My goal is to be a force for change and support in the performing arts, foster new work and unknown playwrights, and create audience members who are well informed and passionate about the values arts organizations inspire and implement in their communities. After doing much research, the Florida State University School of Theatre MFA Theatre Management Program is one of the most prestigious, well known, and hands on programs in the nation; it is aligned with my goals and has given me the confidence, tools, and skills to succeed as a leader in the arts.

Making the decision to return to school after ten years of working in non-profit and educational theatre environments was a big deal for me; truthfully it was a little unnerving. At the time, I was wrestling with the idea of leaving the "real world" to pursue a full-time graduate education. Now I can say without hesitation, coming to FSU was the best decision I have ever made. The MFA, Theatre Management program is the most collaborative, challenging, and rewarding opportunity I have experienced in my professional career. The program strikes a balance between self-directed initiatives and a planned curriculum led by our team of faculty, both allowing individuals to grow and thrive in his or her own experience. Graduates of this program go on to shape the fields in which we work; it’s an education that will pay off again and again throughout the rest of my career.

I worked in the non-profit management sector for five years after undergrad; I knew that pursuing a graduate degree was quickly becoming a “now or never” situation. Out of the many schools and programs I researched, I found the Theatre Management program to be a perfect fit for me; it’s a terminal degree program that’s cost-conscious, networked and reputable nationwide. Additionally, I feel supported in this family-like community because of the high-caliber classmates I work with on a daily basis. If you’re looking for a fantastic program that challenges you and puts you in control of your education, Florida State is the place for you.

After obtaining a bachelor's degree from the College of Business at University of South Florida I immediately started work at a rotating repertory LORT theatre with many responsibilities ranging from acting to social media. I knew, however, an MFA was the next step. Pursuing my MFA in Theatre Management at Florida State continuously proves to be the best decision I have ever made. While here, I have met the most talented and focused learners who share my love for business and the arts. The engaging and easygoing atmosphere compliments the superior work we produce on a daily basis. The generosity of the School of Theatre is unparalleled and it embraces each of its candidates personally and financially. I am doing what I love at a place I love. I am proud to represent the School of Theatre at Florida State.

The phrase “creating opportunity” comes to mind when thinking about the MFA, Theatre Management program at Florida State. With a thoughtfully laid out structure, the program provides students with a practical knowledge of all aspects of managing a theatre, from marketing to ticketing and everything in between. Working within these departments, I have developed my primary responsibilities, creating opportunities that highly align with and reflect my professional interests. The intensive, hands-on work allows me to actively integrate my personal experience and coursework into comprehensive working practices. I treasure the opportunity to collaborate with the talented and passionate students, faculty, and staff at The School of Theatre and know I belong to a family that will support me the rest of my career.

I spent the past three years performing on an education based school tour across Northern California. While touring I fell in love with theatre as a tool for education and in love with the gift touring the arts brings to the life of a child. I decided I wanted to create my own touring program in the Southeast, but wondered how? I needed to fine-tune my leadership and communication skills, develop a better understanding of non-profit theatre, and educate myself on fundraising and development. I have found all of those opportunities here at Florida State as part of the MFA in Theatre Management program. I have no doubt that this program is preparing me for the rigorous task of starting my own company, and the connections I am making here will be invaluable to my future success.
