Florida State /  School of Theatre / General Auditions

General Auditions

The School of Theatre at Florida State will hold General Auditions on
Sunday, August 26th from 10:00 am until 6:00 pm in the Richard G. Fallon
Theatre in the Fine Arts Building, on the corner of Copeland and Call
Streets.

Each auditionee has 90 seconds in which to perform either contrasting
monologues, or one monologue and approximately 16 bars worth of song.
You must sing if you would like to be considered for any of the
musicals.

This year there will be a pianist for General Auditions, so you should
plan on singing with accompaniment.  This means that YOU MUST BRING
MUSIC to the audition.  YOU MUST SING FIRST AND THEN PERFORM YOUR
MONOLOGUE.

Your music must be:

1.  Readable.  Make sure that the notes are clear, that the key
signature is there, and that the music has not been cut off at the
bottom of the page.  There must be a piano part – i.e., do not bring
just the vocal line, with or without chords.

2.  In the key you are singing.  The pianist will not transpose for you.

3.  Either stapled to a file folder or in a notebook, preferably
without a page turn.  If you use a folder, be sure that it will stay
open. If you wish to use the original book, make sure that the book
will stay open on the piano’s music rack.  Do NOT bring loose pages,
as they tend to fold over and fall off the piano.

4.  Carefully marked.  Indicate where to start and stop, plus any
additional necessary information such as pauses or tempo adjustments.

There will not be an opportunity to rehearse with the pianist ahead of
time, so choose your cuts accordingly.  Stay away from accompaniments
that are difficult to sight-read, such as most Sondheim.

As the person before you at the audition is doing her or his
monologue, you will be able to speak to the pianist quietly to give
your tempo (sing the beginning quietly to pianist) and point out
anything of importance (for instance, a key change or pause). This can
only take as long as the monologue before you, so rehearse what you
will sing and say to the accompanist as part of your package.

If you have any questions about these instructions, you may e-mail Dr.
Gayle Seaton at gseaton@fsu.edu.

Auditions are open to the public and sign up sheets will be available
in the main lobby of the Fine Arts Building, August 6th. If you are
not able to sign up prior to auditions, or if you have further
questions, please send an e-mail request to
fsugeneralauditions@gmail.com, and a confirmation e-mail will be
returned.  Unfortunately we cannot accept phone requests.

As the audition sheets fill up, additional times will be posted, so if
the sheet is full, please check back.  We will schedule the first
block beginning at 10:00 am, and requests are confirmed on a first
come, first serve basis.

Please arrive 30 minutes before your scheduled audition time in order
to complete the necessary paperwork.
